About 23five Incorporated
23five Incorporated is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development and increased awareness of sound in the arts.
Founded in 1993, 23five secured federal 501(c)(3) status in 1995 , and continues to work both directly with individuals and in partnership with organizations to present programs featuring artists who engage with and discuss the medium of sound.
Our focus is on artistic endeavors which are primarily concerned with the use of sound but fall outside of what is normally considered music. This includes but is not limited to: field recordings, radio art transmissions, performances, installations, sound sculpture, site-specific public art, video and new media arts.
We aim to achieve these goals by: sharing an archive of published recordings; becoming a development partner for educational projects with artists, schools, community and cultural centers, alternative art spaces, museums, galleries, radio broadcasters, media organizations, and any others interested in learning about the nature and history of sound art; serving as a think-tank, resource center and sound archive to promote an atmosphere where theoretical discourse may flourish; presenting and documenting performances, installations and public discussions; and providing the public with the opportunity to experience and review sound works and essays produced by artists and theorists. In efforts to build community and collaborate with a broad range of artists and theorists engaging with sound, 23five Incorporated continues to research and build international resources and contacts for public access through this website.
